Biographie

Joseph FONCLAUSE, known as "le Mayeux" served his apprenticeship in MIRECOURT under Etienne PAJEOT  with whom he surely collaborated later on.
FONCLAUSE came to Paris circa 1832 where, according to certain authors, he is said to have joined TOURTE's workshop
for a short period.
He then joined the workshop of J.B. VUILLAUME where he remained until 1840.

Workshop
In 1840 Joseph FONCLAUSE established himself on rue Pagevin where he remained nearly all his life, moving just once toward the end of his career to 68 bis rue de Constantine.

Stamps
FONCLAUSE used three different stamps :
- two in broad lettering, one with a dot after the name, the other without.
- one with smaller letters.
It is not uncommon to find unstamped bows by FONCLAUSE as well.
